The project The Black Mountain. Mining town visitor center The Skin It emerges as a minimal intervention in one of the most unique enclaves of Bercia's industrial heritage.. Located in the Peña del Seo, the old mining town, the work of architect Ramón Cañas del Río, It has been in an advanced state of ruin since its abandonment in the years 50 del SXX. The action is proposed as an active conservation strategy: give use to the set to guarantee its survival, without falsifying their memory or literally reconstructing what disappeared.
The intervention focuses on one of the town's pavilions, maintaining the existing walls as witnesses of the past. These walls are consolidated and remain in their ruined condition, allowing time, the vegetation and the landscape continue to act on them, integrating them naturally into the environment.
On this stone base, a new roof is introduced that recovers the original volumetry of the building., but it is executed using a contemporary solution: a mirror cover that reflects the sky, the mountain and surrounding ruins. This strategy seeks to minimize the visual impact of the new intervention, making the architecture practically disappear in the landscape.
The result is a silent architecture, that does not compete with the place, but it accompanies him, establishing a dialogue between past and present where ruin and new construction mutually reinforce each other.
The project received the Award Canedo Palace 2025 to the best rehabilitation of Bierzo.
